History
Smoky Quartz was known as a Stone of Power. To the ancient Druids, it was sacred and signified the potent dark power of Earth gods and goddesses. In other cultures it guided souls to the afterlife.
In the 12th century the Chinese used smooth panes of Smoky Quartz to protect the eyes, much like our modern day sunglasses. And in 16th century Britain, Smoky Quartz was made into jewellery and worn during periods of mourning.
Smoky Quartz is the national gem of Scotland. The Celts mined the brownish-gray Quartz in the Cairngorm Mountains of the Scottish highlands. These stones were eventually used for Highlander apparel in the form of jewellery, kilt pins, and on the handles of weaponry. The term “Smoky Quartz” was introduced by J. S. Dana in 1837 and was named for its color which had been likened to smoke.
